VDB-Loi Teams with Allens Linklaters for Myanmar Oil and Gas Briefing

November 29, 2012

Myanmar is preparing for its next round of bids for oil and gas blocks, including deepwater offshore blocks. Regional legal and tax firm VDB Loi is teaming up with the international law firm of Allens Linklaters for an event to advise companies on the legal and tax issues in this emerging market.

“Myanmar is a tremendous opportunity for oil and gas companies,” says VDB Loi Partner Edwin Vanderbruggen, who will present at the event. “There are 20 onshore and offshore blocks. For many of them exploration has yet to begin. There is quite a bit of interest”.

The event, “Myanmar Oil & Gas: Model Production Sharing Contract and Local Tax Issues,” will take place on 10 December at the Ritz-Carlton Millenia in Singapore. The city is home to one of VDB Loi’s six regional offices. Other offices are in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Vietnam, and Myanmar.

VDB Loi is one of Myanmar’s leading foreign legal and tax firms with approximately 20 fee earners.

Mr. Vanderbruggen, one of Southeast Asia’s most experienced tax lawyers, will focus on the local legal and tax aspects of the oil industry, based on his previous experience with international petroleum companies in Myanmar. Specifically, he will discuss Myanmar’s model PSC (production sharing contract). Marae Ciantar, a partner at Allens, and Stuart Bedford, a partner at Linklaters, will focus on the international aspects.

“It’s a win-win,” Mr. Vanderbruggen said of the collaboration with Allens Linkaters, a leading law firm in the Asia Pacific region. “It is very good to have two firms, one that focuses on the local issues and another that focuses on the international issues. At one meeting we can look at both perspectives.”
